What are micron bags and why do they matter?
Last Updated:
A micron is a tiny unit of measurement that refers to the size of the holes in the screens used to collect bubble hash (trichomes). When you see the lowercase “u” after a number, it represents micron size — for example, 90u means 90 microns. Hash is collected in stages, starting with the largest bag (220u) down to the smallest (45u).
- 220u – Filters out plant matter; not usually collected for hash (often food grade).
- 190u – Separates remaining plant material; typically used for vape carts or food grade.
- 160u – Captures larger, variable-quality trichomes with complex terpenes.
- 90u – Collects mature trichomes that are rich in terpenes and cannabinoids; the most sought-after.
- 70u – Captures semi-mature to mature trichomes, depending on the strain.
- 45u – Collects small, immature trichomes.
Micron bags matter because they separate trichomes at different stages of ripeness, which impacts the quality, flavor, and value of the hash. A helpful comparison is to think of an orange tree: the smallest oranges (like 45u trichomes) are sour and underdeveloped, while the ripest, juiciest oranges (like 90u trichomes) are the most flavorful and desirable. That is why 90u hash is often considered the highest quality and can be found primarily in a higher tier product line.
